Swift Essay Tenative Thesis Paragraph

Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” is a political satire written in response to the disturbing state of affairs in Ireland during the Irish-English war. In the text Swift uses the appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos to effectively portray his point that the actions of the English in the aftermath of the war were morally wrong. Along with these more concrete persuasions, Swift uses an abundance of mockery, a grotesque solution, and a diatribe on the English to degrade their country. Swift successfully communicates to his audience his utter disgust at their behavior and fulfills his purpose of acknowledging the demonic nature of their wrongdoing.

  1. I liked you're link, it was interesting to read. I like that you are arguing for Swift's utter disgust, I didn't think to argue that - rather just if I thought it was effective or not.

  2. Nice start to your paper. It is always good to give an explanation to your reader of the main point of the reading in which you did. Good luck on the rest of it!

  3. The war you linked to took place in the mid 17th century and the modest proposal was written in the early 18th century. So you might want to change that to after the irish-engish war. Ireland at the time of Swift's writing was a sister kingdom to England.
